Alprostadil (Prostaglandin E1 / PGE1)
Description:
Alprostadil, also known as Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), is a naturally occurring vasodilatory lipid compound derived from arachidonic acid. It plays a vital role in vascular tone regulation, smooth muscle relaxation, and tissue perfusion. In research, Alprostadil is studied for its effects on erectile function, peripheral circulation, and cardiovascular signaling, as well as its cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in ischemic and tissue injury models.
Key Benefits:
Promotes vasodilation and improves blood flow
Relaxes smooth muscle and enhances tissue oxygenation
Supports studies in erectile function and vascular regeneration
Exhibits anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects
Useful in cardiovascular, renal, and tissue recovery research
Mechanism of Action:
Alprostadil binds to EP2 and EP4 prostaglandin receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells, activating adenylate cyclase and increasing intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Elevated cAMP levels lead to smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation, and increased blood flow. Additionally, Alprostadil modulates platelet aggregation, reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury, and supports endothelial protection — making it a valuable compound in vascular, renal, and cardiac research.
