Melatonin (N-Acetyl-5-Methoxytryptamine)

Description:
Melatonin is a naturally occurring indoleamine hormone synthesized primarily by the pineal gland and derived from the amino acid tryptophan. It regulates circadian rhythm, sleep–wake cycles, and antioxidant defense at the cellular level. Beyond its well-known role in promoting restful sleep, Melatonin has been studied for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects, as well as its ability to support mitochondrial health and DNA integrity.

Key Benefits:

  • Regulates circadian rhythm and promotes restorative sleep

  • Acts as a powerful antioxidant and free-radical scavenger

  • Supports immune function and neuroprotection

  • Aids in mood balance and hormonal regulation

  • Contributes to anti-aging and cellular longevity research

Mechanism of Action:
Melatonin binds to MT1 and MT2 receptors in the brain, synchronizing circadian signals that control sleep and hormonal secretion. It also exhibits direct antioxidant activity, neutralizing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase. By modulating mitochondrial membrane potential and reducing oxidative DNA damage, Melatonin plays a vital role in cellular defense, energy metabolism, and neuroendocrine stability.
